AP Nerves 2018

When you click Submit (at the bottom of this web page) it will save your work on the server for me.

You might want to actually write your answers in Word (so you can spell check them) and then cut-and-paste into the boxes. That way, if the computer misplaces your work you can just re-paste the answers.

THIS IS A REALLY LONG ASSIGNMENT.
YOU’LL MISS LOTS OF IMPORTANT STUFF IF YOU DON'T TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY

You can submit "partial" documents and continue where you left off, BUT, you are responsible for knowing where you left off-The form software can't tell you, and I won't.

TAB OR USE THE MOUSE Between the fields....

The boxes will expand as you type if you need more space.

The "form handler" software doesn't like "blanks."

So, if you don't have an answer, leave the "-" or "NA" or -required- in the box.

If you work with someone else they need to put in a form as well. Even if your answers are the same.

Go to:
https://www.nobelprize.org/educational/medicine/nerve_signaling/index.html

Under the spiral that looks like a notebook on the left there is a link that says "Info" Click on that, and then after reading that short passage click on the "play" link that is to the right.

Now...There are 18 "Hot spots" associated with the diagram of the nerve across the top of the "notebook.."

To do well on this assignment you will have to go through ALL 18 of them.

DO NOT CUT AND PASTE FROM THE SITE-I KNOW THE TEXT. I WANT YOU TO EXPLAIN IT IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

Q01-The nervous system. What are the main components of the nervous system?

Q02-What does nerve tissue consist of?

Q03-What are the basic units of the nervous system?

Q04-Where does communication between individual cells take place?

Q05-When was the first neurotransmitter observed?  What was it? Look up ergot and see if you can wow me with trivia.

Q06-What does a neurotransmitter do?

Q07-When does a nerve cell fire? Give me an analogy for "all or none."

Q08-How fast do nerve signals travel? How fast is this compared to Usain Bolt?

Q09-How does an electrical impuse travel through a nerve cell? Why is this story something biological oceanographers know about?

Q10-How are neurotransmitters released from the nerve ends?  What does the word "quanta" mean and [this will require outside research] how is this related to quantum mechanics?

Q11-What happens when a nerve signal is transmitted from one nerve cell to another? What is a cell membrane made from? How is this related to the idea in this module?

Q12 Where are neurotransmitters stored? Where do you think they are made? How are they transported to the axon endings?

Q13-What happens to the neurotransmitters after they have been released? Look up the name of at least 1 SSRI, and describe how it makes you feel better.

Q14-How can neurotransmitters affect us? Why is it called L-dopa (not R-dopa, or just dopa)?

Q15 What happens when the neurotransmitter dopamine attaches to a receptor?

Q16 How are the ion channels involved in nerve signalling? Why can't ions just diffuse through the membrane?

Q17 How are synapses involved in forming memories? Why do biological oceanographers from Miami care about this module? [hint it has NOTHING to do with memories].

Q18-Nerve Signalling summary. Describe an action potential.

Q19-HA. No module. Dr. G. often uses a phrase he learned from his father "hic Rhodus, hic salta." What does that have to do with saltatory conduction and nerves in mammals?

Q20-Any last comments?
