Exploring Infectious Diseases

When you click Submit (at the bottom of this web page) it will save your work on the server for me. If you get a "proxy error" hit -refresh- until you get a "Thanks"

You can't resume a submission, so, you might want to actually write your answers in Word (so you can spell check them) and then cut-and-paste into the boxes. That way, if the computer misplaces your work you can just re-paste the answers, and if you don't finish in one "sitting" you don't have re-do all the work.

TAB OR USE THE MOUSE Between the fields....

Answer the questions as best you can. The boxes will expand as you type if you need more space. (Don't worry if it is a one word answer. The box size is standard.)

Since you will be working in groups, put all the names of the people in the group in the box. The ideal group size is 2. As an exception I will allow groups of 3. No groups of 4 or 5. If you work as a group of 3 I expect better answers. Group sizes above 3 will be penalized in the grading.

The "form handler" software doesn't like "blanks" so, if you don't have an answer, leave the -No answer- in the box.

There is more to do besides just reading the material.

Go to the NSF Virtual Disease Card Sort:  http://infectiousdiseases.edc.org/content/module/1/activity/1-applet?view=teacher

Divide the diseases into Infectious/Inherited/Environmental
1-What criteria did you use to sort the diseases into the three categories? Explain yourself.

Read Agents of Disease (on the menu on the left) or: http://infectiousdiseases.edc.org/content/module/1/reading/2?view=student

YES, it is a lot of reading.

2-What is meant when an organism is termed an “infectious agent”?

2-Create a table that compares an example of each type of infectious agent—bacterium, virus, and parasite. Using the following criteria, compare how the three types of infectious agents are similar and how they differ:
    Characteristics Spread Symptoms Treatment/Prevention
    Bacteria

    Virus

    Parasite

    3-
Why is it important to specify that a parasite must be of a different species from the host? Can you think of an example of a parasitic-like relationship where the “host” and “parasite” are of the same species?

Go to the section on Viruses Go Viral  http://infectiousdiseases.edc.org/content/module/3

Read the Overview and then do the activity  1b on Infectious or Contagious?

4-What is the difference between Infectious and Contagious?
