Honors Biology-Periods 2, 4, 5

1/6, 7 Circulatory System;

1/8, 9 Respiratory System; Bottle Activity; Pulse & exercise mini-lab  [Data below]

1/10 (1-6) Contagion Part  I

Homework

Due 1/5/2020 (11:59 PM) EXTRA CREDIT: Scavenger Hunt (Online Data Entry)

This is a 50 question preview of topics from the EOC. The questions are online in the shared folder. There is a form which MUST be used before 11:59 PM on 1/5/2020 to submit your answers.  NO credit will be given for answers not submitted in the online form or answers submitted after the deadline

Due 1/10 Blood flow through the Heart Diagram

This grade will be the last grades of the 2nd marking period

Due 1/13, 14 Pulse & exercise mini-lab

For each average you are also being given the Standard Deviation (SD), and the Standard Error of the Mean (SEM) -you can look them up, but, bascially they are measures of how varied the numbers are from the mean.  Scientists generally report their means (averages) as the mean plus or minus twice (2X) the SEM. So, the resting boys pulse is 70 +/- 4, and at exercise  111 +/- 14, so they are really different. The girls resting pulse is 65 +/- 4, so the boys and girls aren't very different.  You can also think that the error bars on a graph would be 2 SEM (Standard Error of the Mean) from the mean, so that if you were to plot 64 you would do it  with error bars 4 up and down.
Boy-Resting Pulse Boys Exercise Pulse   Girls Resting Pulse Girls Exercise Pulse     Boys Breaths Resting Boys Breaths Exercise   Girls Breaths Resting Girls Breaths Exercise
Average 70 111   65 106     16 27   17 26
SD 13 37   11 24     5 11   5 7
SE 2 7   2 4     1 2   1 1

This lab will be the first grade of the 3rd marking period

The end of the marking period is Thursday 1/16/2020

I will guarantee to grade late work submitted by Friday 1/10/2020. I will try to do my best to grade and enter work submitted between 1/10-1/15, but, no promises.

Missed tests and quizzes must be completed by Wednesday 1/15 lunchtime.

In Memorium - You don't know this yet, but, my favorite musician (whose music you will hear alot in class) is a South African, Johnny Clegg. I should say, was a South African, since he died on Tuesday 7/16/2019. Go to YouTube and listen to some of his music. Search the Internet for his story. A truely great man. RIP Dr. G.

Update 6/28

Over 85% of my student's passed the EOC. in 2019

Advice from the Honors Biology class of 2018-19 to the class or 2019-20.... Click here

2019-2020 Green-Paper-Policy

In an attempt to reduce the amount of paper I can misplace and to reduce the number of trees cut down for my classes I am instituting the following policy.

Each assignment submitted via email or OneNote will earn an extra 1-2 points on that assignment.

You can’t lose by submitting via email.  The only caveat (warning) is that digital submissions are easier to check for plagiarism.
You want to read the "Don't Panic" document (always a  work in progress, but, up-to-date as of June 2019)
Homework Email address:  DrG.ATM@gmail.com

Shared Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1f_ABobkRW4RbyasTxUfYAgQv9FxKcCLk?usp=sharing

This contains the most up-to-date versions of the benchmarks, an essential content outline, a vocabulary list, and a list of Latin & Greek prefixes, suffixes and stems - all of which will also help  you succeed.   It will eventually contain lab handouts, worksheets etc.

General Information and advice:

OnLine Biology Book from Maricopa (Arizona) Community College (Lower than AP Bio, but above Honors Biology) really good background and review).
http://www2.estrellamountain.edu/faculty/farabee/biobk/biobooktoc.html

Writing Conclusions

Writing lab reports (general format and suggestions)

OnLine video reviews (Youtube)  - some are above the level of honors biology, but, they can really help.
Bozeman-Youtube channel (obviously it doesn't work well in school) http://www.youtube.com/user/bozemanbiology#p/c/4A0F9177F62B4435
Crash Course - Youtube channel ((obviously it doesn't work well in school) Covers biology, ecology, and chemistry http://www.youtube.com/user/crashcourse/videos
Kahn Academy - http://www.khanacademy.org/#biology

This course is correlated to the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards which can be found at:http://www.floridastandards.org/Standards/FLStandardSearch.aspx

In general we will be following the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Pacing Guide for Honors Biology.
The benchmarks/objectitves from 2012-13  (which may or may not be the same for 2019-20)  can be found  HBio-EOC Benchmarks
You need a reader for Adobe pdf files, which can be obtained for free from www.adobe.com

These are great pages for EOC review, but you can use them during the year... Review pages and sample questions from Escambia County.
