 FYI-

For current 11th and 10th graders:

The Honors Executive Internship Program will be listed on the Subject Selection forms for current Juniors and Sophomores.  If you would like to participate in this program, read the information and return the applications to Ms. Rodriguez, CAP Advisor by March 12, 2014.

Since 1958, the Honors and Executive Internship Program (HEIP) has provided exciting opportunities for high school juniors and seniors in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.  Through a community-based internship, students are paired with community professionals to gain experience and first-hand knowledge in their intended collegiate field of study. Internship providers who participate in the program share their time and talents so that interns have meaningful, career-related experiences.

The internship is designed to give students real-life experiences in the world of work, with students taking on the roles and responsibilities of a valued member of a company.  It is important that the student interns understand that dress, punctuality, attendance, and behavior reflect well upon them and their parents, teachers, schools, and peers.

The internship program is an elective course that can be taken for one or two annual credits, depending on the individual student’s schedule.  A local honors point is awarded for each credit earned.  Students do not receive pay during their internship, as they are earning high school credit for their work at the internship site.

Students who will be Juniors and Seniors for the upcoming school year, are eligible, but must meet the following qualifications:

Minimum un-weighted scholastic GPA of 3.00

                   Excellent school attendance

Internship application (must be typed) submitted with:

        Proof of medical insurance

                School Activities Resume

For one credit, the minimum number of hours required is five (5) per week or forty-five (45) hours for the quarter.  We recommend that students take it as a 7th period elective.

For two credits the minimum number of hours required is ten (10) per week or ninety (90) hours for the quarter.  We recommend that students take it as a 7th and 8th period elective.

Transportation is not provided by M-DCPS.  Students must make their own transportation arrangements to and from their internship.

Complete applications are DUE March 12th to MS. Rodriguez, CAP Advisor. Late applications will not be accepted!  NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

Homework

Due 1/13 Something different….If the YouTube videos are helping you understand the reading, by all means watch them, but, for this topic…

Go to http://www.dnaftb.org/ There are 41 “modules” that connect genetics to DNA. The animations are a little simplistic, but, go through them all and you will learn something!

Go to http://www.dnai.org/index.htm Go through the timeline, code, manipulation and genome sections.

Do this at your own pace, but, get it done, so we can discuss what you didn’t understand and what it means.

FYI Summer Program for juniors....

The Ocean Exploration Trust’s (OET) Honors Research Program (HRP) invites rising high school seniors  (junior year completed by summer of 2014) to participate in a seven-week summer program from July 7 through August 8, 2014  (dates subject to change) with an added 7 – 14 days on an oceanographic exploration expedition. Participating students will gain exposure to and experience in the applications of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) in the field of ocean exploration by participating in the Nautilus Exploration Program, founded in 2008 by Dr. Robert Ballard and conducted by the Ocean Exploration Trust. Our international program centers on scientific exploration of the  ocean launched from aboard Exploration Vessel (EV) Nautilus, a 64meter research vessel, and partner ships.

Participating high school students will work with scientists at the University of Rhode Island (URI) Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) to develop a research project that will culminate with each student joining an oceanographic research expedition in the summer or fall aboard a research vessel such as the Exploration Vessel (EV) Nautilus or Sailing Training Ship (STS) Bodrum. The onshore component of the program will expose students to the interdisciplinary nature of oceanography and educate them in the fields of geology, biology, archaeology, chemistry, and computer science as they relate to ocean science and exploration. While at URI, students will learn how to process, analyze, and interpret oceanographic data and work on projects that will contribute to the objectives of the research expeditions they are scheduled to be on. Students will join expeditions for 7 – 14 days in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, or the Black Sea and will be immersed as part of the science team on board; they will conduct data watches and assist with processing of data collected during the expedition. Upon return to school, students complete a report for OET as well as present findings to their teachers and classes.

Students can also earn 3 credits from URI. Applications are due Feb 7th and can be found with additional info here : http://www.oceanexplorationtrust.org/#!honors-research-program/ca78

Agenda and Homework updated 12/19

1/6 Genetics/Fly lab; chromosomal basis of inheritance

1/7 Advanced, non-Mendelian Genetics

1/9 Double Helix

1/10 DNA

Homework

Due 1/6 Chi-square mini-lab math

Due 1/6 Report on DNA sequencing, focusing on next generation sequencing

At the HHMI lectures we learned that while some data had been collected using Sanger sequencing almost all the data that was now being collected was done using “next generation sequencing.” OK…so what do they mean by that. Explain HOW it works in a way that I can understand.

Due 1/10 Fly genetics online “lab”  While I am handing out the lab in class, there is a copy in the shared folder for those of you who lose the original.  The web site for the Virtual Fly lab can be found at http://www.sciencecourseware.org/vcise/drosophila/

Due 1/10 Read Chapter 16 (make sure you already read 15)

Most of you did very well on the cell drawing quiz (average-92). If you didn’t and want a “re-do” that is possible. You will lose 10 points for the “retake”, but, if you did poorly he first time and get a 100 the second (100-10=90) that is an improvement. At lunchtime or after school by appointment, by Friday.

New scholarship sponsored by NSHSS  (don’t ask me what NSHSS is-but, somehow I’m on their email list)-$2,000 college scholarships for outstanding leaders. This new scholarship has been launched to encourage young scholars who are leading by positive example in their schools and communities. The scholarship is open to all high school seniors who will graduate in 2014, and who have a minimum 3.0 GPA. (there is no NSHSS membership requirements for this scholarship). The deadline is October 31. The application requires a personal response to one of two questions about leadership; a resume; an educator recommendation; transcript; and photo for possible website posting of recipients.  Students may apply for this scholarship at this link: http://nshssfoundation.org/scholarships/greg-goff-leadership-awards/.
