It's that time of year again: as May rolls around, many high school students around the country immerse themselves in fat test prep books and replenish their coffee stock at home to survive the stressful AP testing season. Earning a score of 3 or higher may exempt you from taking similar courses from college, so you'll want to do the best you can on these advanced examinations

·        Inform yourself about the exam(s) you are taking. Know the format, directions, expectations, grading policies, and material that will be covered. Don't be caught off-guard!

·        Start preparing early. The AP courses you are enrolled in are designed to prepare you for the exam, so take the classwork and homework seriously. Pay attention, take notes, review on your own time, and take the time to memorize any needed material. Save yourself from the stress of cramming when spring rolls around.

·        Take many practice exams, preferably under test-like conditions. There are practice exam questions available online, such as on the College Board website.

·        Buy AP test preparation books. Take a diagnostic test and review the material you seem to have trouble with the most. Then take the practice tests to see how you do.

·        If you feel it's necessary, find a tutor or enroll in prep classes. But most of the time, your teachers in school should be able to address all of your questions.

·        Be motivated. Beware of distractions such as YouTube or Facebook. Remind yourself how much you want to do well--write out your goals and post it somewhere on your desk you can easily see. Do not fall prey to procrastination.

QuestBridge's College Prep Scholarship provides more than 1,500 awards that give outstanding, low-income high school juniors the knowledge they need to compete for admission to leading college.  (if a student receives free/reduced lunch they meet the low-income criteria)  They also seek underrepresented minority students!

The college Prep Scholarship application will be available online in mid-February 2012 and is due on March 27, 2012.

Students from low-income backgrounds with strong academic records actually have significant advantages over other students in the college admissions process.  Leading colleges are seeking to increase socio-economic diversity on their campuses, which means they are looking for students who have achieved academic excellence despite financial challenges.

Check out the website at:  http://www.questbridge.org

Questbridge also provides full scholarships to top tier schools, to seniors who meet the same criteria!  Something the juniors should keep in mind for next year!!!!

Please inform your students (who are entering their junior or senior year) of our Summer High School Scholars Research program, funded by our Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) grant.  The HHMI High School Scholars Program is an exciting opportunity for public and private students with a passion for science to gain hands on research experience. Students, in teams, do biomedical research for seven weeks at the University of Miami (UM).  Placements are available in biomedical engineering, neuroscience, ophthalmology, biology, and other research areas tailored to students’ interests and experience. Student teams will be mentored by UM professors, be responsible for an investigative project, prepare a research report suitable for publication, and give an oral presentation at a UM research symposium. In the past years several of our high school participants have published their research in high-impact scientific journals.  Public school students receive a stipend for their participation and private school students receive community service credit.  The 2012 program will begin on Monday, June 11 and end on Thursday, July 26.  We are currently accepting applications.  The application deadline is April 6, 2012.  Students interested in applying to the program should read the admission information, the application procedures, and the frequently asked questions sections of our website:

FYI-ON COLLEGE: Now is the best time for juniors to start planning for college

Posted:   02/13/2012 09:02:41 PM PST

The college admissions season will be coming to a close for current high school seniors over the next few months, but this is the time for juniors to really begin thinking about their futures beyond high school. While many parents have been prepping for college since their children were toddlers, others have not yet begun to think about the process. There are some key things that students and families should bear in mind right now.

The first is testing. While the flurry of different tests that students take these days can be overwhelming, it is crucial that they sit down and plan out their testing calendar between now and the first semester of their senior year. Remember that most colleges will accept tests taken as late as December. If you plan to apply early to any colleges, the latest you can test typically is October. When planning your schedule, give yourself ample time to study and retest if necessary. Just because December may be an option for you, don't delay testing too far into the future. If you are planning to take Advanced Placement tests this May, sign up through your high school and start prepping now. You really only have about 12 weeks until test dates. And remember that AP tests are only offered once a year, so there is no backup option. If you have not yet taken the SAT or ACT, and you plan to apply to colleges that will require either of these tests, think about which test date(s) will be best for you. There are no tests offered in July or August.

Now is also the time to start researching colleges. There are plenty of great free resources online where you can learn about different campuses. And colleges' websites are rich with information about academic programs and unique opportunities. If you and your family are planning to visit colleges, try to do so when schools are in session to get the most realistic impression possible. If that is not an option, visiting during the summer is fine, but bear in mind that campuses might be a little more quiet then because not many students are around. If you believe that you will apply early to a given school, it is vital to visit. It may be hard to convince your parents to let you commit to a campus that you and they have not seen. Visiting will also give you a more in-depth look into that school, and that can help you when you write your college essays. If you are not planning to visit colleges, that is also OK. Many colleges will host booths at college fairs and send representatives to speak in your area or even at your school. Try to attend as many of those as possible to learn more and also to start building relationships with the admissions officers who will be reading your application next year.

If you have not yet planned your summer, do so now. You don't want to miss out on opportunities because you procrastinated. Many programs also have deadlines that are approaching, so do your research now. Don't feel pressure to attend a summer program, especially one that you have to pay for if it is not in your family's budget or if the program does not really speak to you. The quality of your experience is what colleges are looking for. They want to know what you pursue in your free time. Simply putting a program down as a line item on your application tends to have little impact.

And while college may seem far away, it is important to start planning for it financially. Your parents should start to consider how much they can afford to pay toward your tuition. If you know that you will apply for financial aid, your family should sit down with their accountant or tax advisor to find out if there are any steps they should take now to ensure the best financial aid package down the road.

The next few months are very busy for juniors. Many often feel overwhelmed, especially in the spring when testing is at its height. But rest assured that you will get through it like the nearly 2 million other juniors in the United States. Planning will save you immense stress down the road and help you put your best foot forward during the college admissions process. Good luck.

Please refer students to me, for assistance.

FAFSA tutorial:  Seven Easy Steps to the FAFSA!

Please Share with JUNIORS  (11th Graders)

1.  SAT Registration Deadline for the March 2012 Test is  February 10th!    ALL JUNIORS SHOULD BE TAKING BOTH THE SAT and ACT. Remind students that if they have free/reduced lunch they qualify for the fee waivers (2 for each test).

Juniors,

Start thinking about writing drafts for your college essays.  If you are using the "Common Application" (which is accepted by over 400 schools) you may start now!!!

Start looking over the common application and take a look at all the schools that accept it.

The Common Application has announced that the  essay prompts will remain the same for the 2012 - 2013 application:

Please write an essay of 250 –500 words on a topic of your choice or on one of the options listed below, and attach it to your application before submission. Please indicate your topic by checking the appropriate box. This personal essay helps us become acquainted with you as a person and student, apart from courses, grades, test scores, and other objective data. It will also demonstrate your ability to organize your thoughts and express yourself. NOTE: Your Common Application essay should be the same for all colleges. Do not customize it in any way for individual colleges.

1.  Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

2.  Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.

3.  Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.

4.  Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.

5.  A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.

6.  Topic of your choice.
